Revealed Reveals Poor Writing

Feeling let down after this much awaited sequel. While it was good to finally learn about Jonah's true identity (not what I expected at all!), the book has so many time shifts and alternate time lines and potential time lines that it was almost impossible to follow.

The past, present, and future keep overlapping with no sense whatsoever and time gets mysteriously fixed despite disasters that must have shaken the time infrastructure on a ten on the Richter scale.

There is no real continuity in this book and events seem random. Since both Caught and Risked were brilliant, I was looking forward to some more excellent Haddix writing in Revealed, but this book fallls short of the mark.

I know that everyone's going to buy this book simply to find out Jonah's true identity. You may want to ask a friend or read a review, and then wait to borrow the book from your local public library.

Not her best book...

I have loved Haddix for years and have enjoyed most of her books. This book is not one of my favorites or one that I will be revisiting any time soon.

Pros-
Mystery surrounding main character solved
Interesting characters
Feels like the end of the series

Cons -
Pacing is off... Way too much talking and not enough action/story movement
It was hard to follow all of the paradoxes as an adult... If I as an adult had problems with this book, I am sure the intend audience will too
The dialogue didn't flow
Jonah's past

Overall this book is one I would not recommend. If you want to know what happens, skip to the last chapter or so and read the review summary between JB and Jonah. I wish I had.

Sometimes I wonder if the seven-book series is becoming the new trilogy. J. K. Rowling and Garth Nix started the trend, and other authors have jumped on the bandwagon, including, apparently, Margaret Peterson Haddix. Unfortunately, her seventh and final “Missing” installment falls short of the quality of some of the earlier ones. However, it’s worth reading if only because we finally learn the true identity of Jonah Skidmore.

Jonah is facing one of his worst dilemmas yet: Charles Lindbergh has appeared in his living room, kidnapped his sister Katherine and all of the other missing kids from history, and caused every adult in the town to revert back to Jonah’s age. It’s up to Jonah to team up with the de-aged Angela and JB in order to save the kids, bring the adults back to normal, and foil Lindbergh – who just might be Jonah’s famous father.

This book went wrong in one major way: Haddix allowed herself to get too wrapped up in time travel rules and paradoxes. Her acknowledgments page shows that she may have had an inkling of this, but I’m not sure she noticed just how confusing her writing gets. “Revealed” was a good hundred pages longer than most other “Missing” novels, and I’m guessing about eighty percent of that was attempts to say, “So if this person did this before this and after this, doesn’t that mean there would be like EIGHT MORE branches of time?” I’m exaggerating, but for all the confusion I felt while reading this book, there might as well have been eighteen possible outcomes of Jonah’s actions. This made Haddix’s style suffer, too; it seemed almost like she got tired with all the paradoxes and didn’t bother to make her narrative consistent with previous books. The style that was previously casual and realistic became forced and cheesy, but maybe that’s just because I’m a little older now than I was when the series began.

However, the suspense in “Revealed” was fantastic. Haddix hasn’t lost the art of creating twisting, turning plots that leave her readers on the edge of their seats. She keeps us guessing what will happen to Jonah and Katherine until the very end. That end didn’t feel much like an ending to me, though; it happened pretty quickly despite the length of the book. I would have liked a little more time to understand the conclusion and say goodbye to some of my favorite characters.

Even so, I’d call “Revealed” a fairly worthwhile read. It was disappointing in some ways, but I was sorry for it to end. That’s always a sign of at least a half-decent book.

*Postscript, several months after this review was written: I just found out that "Revealed" is not the last book in the "Missing" series; there's another coming out this September (maybe August). That puts a few things into perspective about this book.

In addition, he has served as a consultant, advising companies on the design, installation, and maintenance of power networks, substations, and electric distribution systems.

Om P. Malik, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Calgary. Dr. Malik has performed pioneering research in the development of adaptive and artificial intelligence–based controllers for electric power systems, and protection of power systems.

Excellent book!

Poor quality images; not as "fabulous" as expected.

I had such hopes for this book. New York is like my second home. And being a bit of an architecture buff I admire many of the buildings in the city, so I was excited to get this. However that bubble quickly burst. The description read (and still does) "magnificently illustrated." That's rather overstated. To me that means I was to expect copious amounts of interior photos (or at least renderings), exterior photos, and of course, floor plans. Lots of floor plans? Check. "Magnicificent" illustrations/photos? NOPE!

Many of those `glorious' floor plans are very poor quality. Understandably the majority of them are quite old, however that doesn't negate the fact that so very many of them look like photocopies of photocopies of photocopies of faxes of photocopies. You know what I mean; those documents that you can tell have been copied a million times & end up fuzzy and where things just sort of bleed together. The title of Peter S.'s review sums things up nicely.

Some of the buildings descriptions are very short, providing only the most basic information (year blt, number of orig units, architect, etc), with only a single photo or rendering of the exterior.

All-in-all I think this is a big let-down. Found for a major Amazon bargain it's worth it to have as a reference, but otherwise it's a waste in my opinion.

Fabulous indeed!

This book provides a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era that actually lasted only a few decades, from say the 1890's to the 1930's.

This work is thoroughly enjoyable though somewhat demanding since it is essentially made up of not-so-large scale floor plans with only short written introductions. One is left to imagine the residents' lives before the Depression, with live-in servants and frequent parties, as well as their rather sudden demise that led to most apartments being broken up in the following decade into two, three or even four distinct units. Many buildings were actually completely gutted and some demolished.

A few floor plans of 1960's buildings are included however and comments provided have become quaint in their naïve appreciation of modernism.

Given the abundance of illustrations and the enormous research that was certainly required, this book is an incredible bargain at the price asked. It is very strongly recommended to anyone interested in New York and its way of life.

Wodak takes us through the stages that led to the normalisation of nationalistic, xenophobic, racist, anti-Semitic and anti-refugee political and public discourse in the UK, Europe and the US. With such discourses playing on and with our fears, Wodak argues, we must stop being so damn scared and finally come to understand the “rhetorical traps” being set by right-wing ideologues. With the recent re-emergence of the “politics of terror”, her clearly written antidote could not be more timely. About the Author

Ruth Wodak is Distinguished Professor of Discourse Studies at Lancaster University. Her research interests focus on discourse studies; identity politics; racism, antisemitism and other forms of discrimination; and on ethnographic methods of linguistic field work.

She was awarded the Wittgenstein Prize for Elite Researchers in 1996 and an Honorary Doctorate from University of Örebro in Sweden in 2010. She has held visiting professorships in University of Uppsala, Stanford University, University Minnesota, University of East Anglia, and Georgetown University (Washington, DC). She is a member of the British Academy of Social Sciences and a member of the Academia Europaea.  In 2008, she was awarded the Kerstin Hesselgren Chair of the Swedish Parliament (at University Örebrö).

Ruth is co-editor of the SAGE journal Discourse & Society, and of the journals Critical Discourse Studies and Journal of Language and Politics. Recent book publications include: The discourse of politics in action: ‘Politics as Usual’ (2011), Critical Discourse Analysis (4 volumes, 2013), Migration, Identity and Belonging (with G. An essential airline management and marketing text.

The Fourth Edition is an updated and important text for people with whom need basic principles in marketing and management explained as it applies to the airline industry.
Airline Marketing and Management is a gem because it carefully breaks down major marketing and promotion concepts all the way down to smaller segments with great examples.
This book is a classic. Readers will get an indepth understanding of aviation and, surprisingly, why the airline industry is still in shambles today. It covers the intricacies of product design and development, pricing and revenue management, pricing and revenue management, distribution channels, and selling and advertising policies.
Many of the "tried and proven time after time" principles are, for the most part, still ignored by airline managers today. The author is diligent in his effort to examine "time-proven principles."
This is a marketing book about the fundamentals. Can't move on until you got them down!

better books are out there....

I just finished reading the 5th edition. I would recommend this book ONLY to those individuals who have zero concept of the airline industry or who have never taken a basic marketing course. Otherwise this book will be a tedious and boring read, exacerbated by the endless typos and horrible writing style and sentence structure. Much of what is written is commonsense and one is often left thinking "no s**t." For those who seek a more academic analysis or more advanced treatment of the subject, I would recommend looking at stuff by Doganis or Holloway.

Airline Marketing and Management is a fascinating book about modern marketing and management in airlines. It approaches this interesting subject in a practical and easy-to-follow way. The airline business has many unique features that Stephen Shaw expertly managed to blend with the basic theory and concepts of marketing. This makes the book an excellent introduction to the field of airline marketing and management.

The reader is introduced to the principles of marketing and their practical application in the current highly dynamic and competitive airline environment. Among the important areas I enjoyed the most are product strategies, pricing, distribution and promotion in the industry, regulatory developments, the implications of low cost carriers to the industry and strategic alliances.

As a player in the airline industry, I am now knowledgeable about building and managing profitable customer relationships, how to study customer needs and wants, selecting target markets, how to attract, retain and grow customers by providing superior value and satisfaction. I highly recommend this book to those wishing to gain a basic understanding of the airline industry.
