I first read Kimchee Days back in 2000 before it was published. I read it cover to cover non-stop! And have re-read it several times. I laughed. I cried. I cheered! It felt like home to me.

Did nike site change that much?

I served at "E" Battery which was the most southern nike missle site in Korea. I was there in 1967 & 1968. While stationed there The Satus Of Forces Agreement was enacted and the USN ship Pueblo was captured. That said I couldn't believe how much had changed at the sites from 68 until the 70's. The seemingly total disregard for authority be it from nco's or officers I found to be a bit over the top, and the percieved daily use of pot and pills was something I never experienced. I know that in our battery rank was not much of an issue off duty, but on duty it would have been somebodys Nads on the table if someone acted in the manner described. The exploits of the main character in the story, both on and off duty reminded me more of stories told by a recruit just home From basic, than that of a seasoned vet. I'm sure that life for an off duty serviceman stationed near a large city like Inchon was much different than what we experienced in the "one road through it village" we knew. We had three small clubs that held maybe 50 people,crude would be an understatement. Entertainment was supplied by a couple of speakers and a turntable that spun the latest bootleg copies of the current hits. There were ladies that would cater to the needs of those who needed and lots of beer and booze to supply a lifetime of memories. There were some very belieable instances, in the book that certainly brought me a smile and peaked some memories. I wasn'nt there in the 70's so I cant'say that it wasn't that way , it just wasn't that way at Echo Battery in 67 & 68. I know the book was written as as fiction based on life at a nike site in the 70's, but as a nike crewman at sites in Korea, Florida, and Germany it just didn't depict what I experienced. I did enjoyed reading the book , just couldn't wrap myself around it.

What if they had just kept coming?

"The light above him clanged red and the BCO reported, "Red status, battle stations!" "Patty was stunned! There had to be a mistake. The B scope showed them what the BCO was looking at..." "He could see the north-south border. On the south side he saw two or three targets. The north side had about two hundred!" -all headed south.

In a book noted for its humor, I found this incident the most CHILLING. A routine drill known as "Blazing Skies" had just morphed into a potential nightmare that could have started a North -South Korean "hot" war and perhaps warmed up a chilled Cold War into World War 3. And so was life in the Nike Hercules antiaircraft batteries in the 1970's near the DMZ. As a veteran whose sole experience of the Cold War was state side, this was all new territory to me, and I found it fasicinating!

The trials, tribulations and "free enterprise" opportunities of a young, new recruit are spelled out in graphic detail in Tim Gatto's EXCELLENT book, "KIMCHEE DAYS or Stoned-cold Warriors" a fictionalized account of the author's - and others - experiences on the front lines of the Cold War. Populated by a cast of weird characters and with Gatto's usual sparse, no fluff or frills writing style, "KIMCHEE DAYS" is Tim Gatto at his finest -and leaves the reader hungry for more - much more. From the officious First Shirt to the highly admirable guard dog Fred and his fine "taste" in Commanding Officers, I promise the book will please and delight the discriminating reader of historical fiction.

Hubris and Pretense

Reading Adler’s book was more like reading the writing of a religious zealot than the writings of a scientist or psychologist. The word “should” for example appears more than 100 times in this book. It is funny how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy recommends getting rid of the shoulds, musts and absolutes in order to resolve neurotic thinking, yet Adler does the opposite.

Adler writes statement after statement about the causes of neurosis without giving a shred of empirical evidence to back up his claims. For example, regarding criminal behavior, he writes, “In all criminal cases, whether they are correctly described or not, we can see the influence of a mistaken childhood”. Adler simply assumes that committing a crime must stem from improper childhood upbringing, without giving any support for his claim.

Adler believes that if we are to live well we must rise to an angelic level of morality and care deeply about the whole of mankind in our everyday existence. For example, he writes: "Life means — to be interested in my fellow men, to be part of the whole, to contribute my share to the welfare of mankind." Of course I care about mankind and my fellow human beings, but in my day-to-day life, how often am I supposed to think about such lofty matters? Must we all become enlightened philosophers in order to live well?

When Adler writes about social cooperation, he does not account for the spontaneous social order and well-being that can emerge through people acting in their own self-interest. Adam Smith realized this 100 years earlier when he wrote , “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages”.

It is possible that kindness, cooperation and goodwill can occur through the mutually beneficial exchanges of goods and services. If I try to take advantage of another person by selling shoddy goods in exchange for some of his goods or services, what are the chances that he will exchange with me in the future? Rather than insisting that we concern ourselves with the good of all humankind, we simply need to focus on the day-to-day honesty and goodness that we treat our friends, family and those we interact with. Humans evolved in small clans of hunter-gathers, where they looked out for each other. Asking us to rise to the level where we are supposed to think about the good of all humankind is too loft of a standard. Moreover, it assumes a level of knowledge that none of us has.

Adler assumes a level of knowledge that is beyond himself and beyond all of us. Fredrick Hayek called this the “pretense of knowledge”. The truth is that it is difficult to know what will benefit “all of humanity”. It is better to focus on your own affairs - how to you treat your family, friends and those you buy or sell goods from. Since we live in a global marketplace, we interact with millions of people on a daily basis, spontaneously enriching each others lives through mutually beneficial voluntary exchanges.

Adler also thinks that most of our personal problems are really social problems. The main thesis of his book is that all neurosis stem from improper upbringing, improper structuring of society, and improper understanding. I don’t know about you, but I’ve found that my neurotic thinking and behavior is caused by my own irrational thinking, not because of my lack of understanding, or societies impartial treatment of me. For example, I see depression and anxiety as being trapped in a prison where you are both the prisoner and the cruel jailor.

Adler seems to want to put the blame for neurosis on our parents and society. He believes that if we can simply learn to cooperate with one another, all our neurotic thinking will vanish. For example, he writes, “all our problems need a knowledge of cooperation” and “All failures — neurotics, psychotics, criminals, drunkards, problem children, suicides, perverts and prostitutes — are failures because they are lacking in fellow-feeling and social interest.”

Adler could not extricate himself from the fashionable intellectual thought of his day. You can see this in his labeling homosexuals as “perverts” and believing that homosexuals must have had a mistaken upbringing.

I find his writing on child rearing especially mistaken. He doesn’t think it is healthy for an infant to sleep in the same room as his parents and thinks you shouldn’t give a child too much affection! He writes, “children should not be physically stimulated. Often parents are very affectionate with their children and their children affectionate with them. To increase the affection of the children they are always hugging them and kissing them. They know that this is not the right way. They should not be so cruel. They should not stimulate the affections of the child. Nor should a child be stimulated mentally.”

In regards too sleeping arrangements he writes, “If it is possible, the children should not sleep in the same room with the parents, let alone in the same bed; and it is also advisable that they should not sleep in the same room with a sister or brother.” This is bizarre because for most of human history family’s shared small houses, huts and teepees where they all lived in the same room! How is it that now, all of the sudden Adler has the pretense to advise something completely contrary to the situation that humans have been adapted to for millennia?

In his writing on dating, he says that women are not encouraged to approach a man to ask him out on a date simply because our society does not encourage it. From an evolutionary standpoint it makes sense that women do not approach the man first. It is simply biology that dictates the woman will be the one who becomes pregnant and do most of the child rearing during the first years of life. She has the womb and mammary gland to feed the infant. From an evolutionary standpoint she is wise to choose her mate carefully, finding a male who is caring and will provide food and protection during the early years while she is doing the laborious task of feeding her infant. She needs to evaluate a mate carefully and probably doesn’t gain much by seeking out a mate, but rather letting the men come to her. Only recently has she been able to outsource some of the laborious tasks of childrearing to others through the invention of bottle feeding and pureed baby foods. Asking society to accept new standards that go against nature should be thought through with care that Adler does not take.

In regards to divorce, he believes the a psychiatrist should make the decision. He writes, “Are we going to put it in the hands of people who themselves are not rightly taught, who themselves do not understand that marriage is a task, who themselves are interested only in their own persons? They would look at divorce in the same way as they look at marriage: "What can be got out of it?” These are obviously not the people to decide....Perhaps we might imagine that if something is wrong with a marriage, a psychiatrist should decide whether or not it should be broken.” This is where Adler’s pretense of knowledge turns to outright hubris. How could such an important decision be outsourced to anyone other than the two people in a marriage? What benefit would it bring to keep people in a marriage when it is no longer beneficial to them? Adler seems to believe that only the self-anointed psychiatrists have the wisdom to make such an important decision. He places the psychiatrist in the same position that the church places priests. At this point it is as if he is calling of a secular priesthood who would make decisions about personal matters that belong to individuals.

I find Adler’s book to be at best armchair philosophizing, at worst it is religious dogma from a self-anointed secular priest.

Adler Superior to Contemporary Popular Psychology

It is remarkable and true that Alred Adler's popular psychology books written 70 years ago are superior to most of the pop psych published today. That is why Adler is still in print. He understood the conflict between feelings of inferiority and striving for superiority. Even more importantly, he explained how fashioning a healthy synthesis of individuality (the creative self) and social interest (energy directed outside, beyond one's self) is the solution to feeling unhappy. Adler avoided the extremes of unrealistic optimism (as in humanistic and positive psychology) and of hopeless pessimism (as seen in Freud and some evolutionary psychology). His vision of psychological health is realistic, very human, and humane. Why read contemporary pop psych when Adler is still in print?

Ironic Insight

I didn't like the first book of the trilogy. I warmed to the second. I loved the intervening shorts. But it's not until I finish the final installment in the trilogy that I really understand and appreciate what Galsworthy was doing here. His treatise on the end of the Victorian age is a deeply thoughtful, ironic, and ultimately very moving one. Glad I stuck with it.

Silly, but fun

I downloaded this book because I was intrigued by the subtitle, "A Tale of the Great Trek." Well, it wasn't really about the trek -- it was about an impossibly wonderful and perfect girl and her even more impossibly wonderful and perfect, and abnormally devoted, black servant/"witch doctress." One doesn't read this sort of book looking for literature, but the yarn was well-knit, if it is possible to say that, and I kept turning the pages. There is some interesting information about the Afrikaner lifestyle in the 19th century, and the first person narrative voice is essentially successful, especially in the beginning. But, come on -- when was the last time you saw a man "wringing his hands"?
If you know what you are getting into -- basically a Classics Illustrated comic book, rife with political incorrectness -- you'll find this an amusing way to pass an hour in the doctor's office, for example. If you expect something that toes the line of contemporary thinking,you will be horrified. Caveat reader.

A lovely story - romantic and exciting

Rider Haggard was an immensely popular writer, and every new novel of his was eagerly awaited, and then devoured by his fans. It is worth the trouble to go beyond King Solomon's Mines, his best-known work, there are many more exciting stories to discover! Swallow is a totally believable character, and so is her tough little friend, a kind of witch-doctor princess. Their tale is narrated by Swallow's mother. What a story! You won't be able to put your Kindle down.

Long but interesting journey...

Enjoyed the thought of the little girl finding a brother and then watching them grow up together. I never studied the boor wars but this made me want to go read more about it. Unsettling how the people never seemed to have a solid home between the Brits and the Kaffirs and the Zulus.

Good practical tips

This book is a quick read but contains nuggets of practical tips on visualizing and exercises in the manifesting process. He gives great tips about using all your senses to visualize and feel your desire, and also has tips about how to become open to receiving. He also emphasizes how important it is to actually spend time doing these exercises every day as opposed to just reading about them, the same way a body builder needs to spend some time every day doing exercises to accomplish his goal. I have read many books including The Secret, Joseph Murphy, Wayne Dyer, and this author did give some very good practical advice not mentioned in these other books.

I am an author of a audiobook that covers a lot of what Mr Coronado covers in this book and I have to say what an outstanding book this is.

I bought it out of curiosity and stayed for the show. If you are looking to change your life then make this book a part of it, everything he speaks about here is the truth and nothing but the truth, but here's the gift, you would have to purchase at least three other books to get the same information that you get here.

Their cars were broken-down, too―with bent frames, rusted out floorboards, and mileage at more than 200,000 on each of them.

“I can clearly remember the day I collapsed on my bed completely desperate and crying out to God,” Gary said. “My wife, Drenda, and I were believers, but something obviously wasn’t working. We were faithful to our church, and we loved God, but something clearly wasn’t right. Nothing had changed for NINE very long years. Things had only gotten worse.”

That was when God revealed several life-changing things to Gary, and his life and his finances were drastically changed. Gary and his wife, Drenda, went from financial ruin to being completely debt free over the next two and a half years, even paying cash for cars and for their dream house. 

Ever since then, Gary has been on a mission to help people all around the world experience the same financial revolution that he experienced.

very good, some of the stories are the same from previous books, but still tons of good information, always good for a refresher on this type of information
This is strong foundational principles that I grew up, we did not grow up with a charge card. You had the money or you did not and you saved. The biggest difference is realizing that God is on your side, you are his child, he wants to proper you and your family in all areas. This being said you have to pray, plan to some extent, pray over your children, family members, prays as if the mountain has already been moved. I have read I believe 4 books and a couple of download CD type items from Gary Keesee. I remember Drenda on TV long before I ever heard of Gary. I think God opened my eyes to this author, very good information.
Do not borrow, pay your bills, save, plan, buy what you need-not everything in the store
Get joy from your family not things that you will have to clean, dust or replace
Keep things in perspective they are tools nothing more
You want take your stuff in a u-haul to heaven, thank goodness

I like the deep, solid, and practical wisdom and teaching on finances. I've been wanting to read some Christian stuff regarding finances which has proven true. Love the honest and humor approach of pastor Gary Keesee.

I'd recommend the book to all Christians.

The book, from my perspective, deserves all the 5 stars. A man went from the very bottom to high top and openly shares the Biblical principles which are available to anyone who would dare open their heart and mind to it.
