Very good and professional book. The book is more academic than a practical one, and to my opinion the target audience is engineering students, specializing in the field of HVAC.
For engineers working in HVAC design, it is a good reference for theory and calculation of various problems.

the best HVAC book

I've read many HVAC books and have worked in HVAC for several years. This is the best HVAC book I've read. It is the only book actually taking advantage of computers. This books complements the "Heat Transfer" and "thermodynamics" books by Nellis/Klein - but also is useful as standalone book.

The knowledge level in this book is pretty high and very thorough. All necessary information is included, no unnecessary fluff. I devoured this book within a week because I could not stop reading it. Years ago I looked at HVAC books and always thought they are missing the point and I will need to write a book on my now to get it all right - until finally now there is a useful HVAC book.

It includes detailed explanations, governing equations and many examples to illustrate the theory and practice.
Last but not least, It is very readable.

A Very Welcome Addition to Stone-Campbell Studies

The Churches of Christ, Christian Church and Disciples of Christ, ironically enough, all trace their origins back to the nineteenth century Christian reform and unity movement led by former Presbyterians Barton Warren Stone and the father and son team Thomas and Alexander Campbell. Known as the Stone-Campbell Movement, this tradition has a long and vaunted history, not just in the US, but around the world.

At last, a comprehensive, well-written, and readable encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Reformation is available. Long needed, this volume more than adequately meets its goal. The volume is edited by well-known, respected scholars of all three of the major branches of the Movement and written by scholars from within each of the segments, and contains a wealth of material on people, places and subjects relating to the Stone-Campbell Reformation.

In short, the volume contains articles on practically every facet of the churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement.

There are however, some seemingly glaring omissions; for example, from the Church of Christ branch alone one does not find articles on JN Armstrong; Yater Tant; the American Bible Union; or Thomas B. Warren and the Spiritual Sword. One choice made by the editors was to restrict articles only to deceased persons in order to avoid any kind of controversy. The reviewer is aware, however, that editorial choices must be made and are often difficult. Omissions are simply unavoidable.

Among other things, this volume adequately succeeds in pointing out just how diverse the traditions and churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement truly are.

All-in-all, the volume is a must-read for serious students of the Stone-Campbell Movement and mainstream American Protestantism in general. Eerdmans is to be commended for publishing such a work, and the editors and contributors commended for their herculean efforts at producing it. It should long serve its goal.

Unique, thorough, and well-written reference by distinguished scholars among Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Churches of Christ, and Christian Churches/Independent. Edited by three scholars, each of whom represents one of the groups--but edited collaboratively. Thumb-throughable, easy to read. Includes not just the obvious--places, people, institutions--but also well-written entries on beliefs, biblical interpretation, history. A great resource for anyone interested in the beliefs, polity, and history of the three branches of the Stone-Campbell movement.

Massive Volume on the Restoration Movement

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE STONE-CAMPBELL MOVEMENT is a massive volume on the people, events, theology, and churches involved in the Restoration Movement. The work covers nearly every facet of the movement from the beginnings with Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone to the various sects in the Restoration Movement such as the United Church of Christ, the mainline Churches of Christ, the International Churches of Christ, the Disciples of Christ, and many more.

This work is an encyclopedia and thus is a reference book than a book you would enjoy reading from cover to cover in your bed at night. However, I found the articles to be interesting. Each subject is in its alphebetical order and I found the bibliography to be very helpful indeed. The writers are fair and balanced on each subject written. There were a few flaws I found with the work in that it couldn't cover every person I felt they could have nonetheless the authors are to be commended for their labours.

Overall this is a solid work. Those interested in reading on the Restoration Movement as a whole or simply want to know where the Movement stands on various theological issues will find this book very helpful. A good read for disciples of Christ.

An Essential Graphology Reference Work

HANDWRITING PSYCHOLOGY is a masterwork filled on every page with numerous nuggets of wisdom. Dr. Ploog teaches graphology in Europe and edits a prestigious German graphology journal. Because of these factors, this gives us a unique opportunity to learn from a handwriting expert with a key and different perspective. In a very concise manner, Dr. Ploog has synthesized numerous complex ideas and presented them in a straightforward and easy to understand way. The book is written for an American audience.

One of the measures of a good graphology book is the use of examples, and HANDWRITING PSYCHOLOGY is filled with them. Included are the handwritings of Walt Disney, Thorton Wilder, Hillary Clinton, physicist Robert Oppenheimer, Winston Churchill and many others.

In analyzing a handwriting, it is fairly easy to sketch out a quick analysis. For instance, is the writing organized or disorganized, written quickly or slowly, does it show creative forms and so on. The real task of the serious student is to get to the SECOND LEVEL OF ANALYSIS which involves many other factors such as ascertaining the Form Level and form of movement, e.g., whether it is "taut or elastic, slack, congested or overextended." Dr. Ploog's book is filled with these kind of nuanced second level factors that must be considered for the analyst to truly create a well-rounded and in-depth assessment of the handwriting being studied.

The First Step In Your Graphology Future

I am not a newcomer to graphology, having worked in this field for the past 15 years. The book is very concise and presents an essential overview of graphology in a professional and academic way. It is a very well rounded book that includes information on almost every facet of graphology, including the introduction of several studies and the research that supports it. There are many books on the market about graphology. Some go into detail about particular systems or schools of thought. Some are written in a less than serious tone. This one is very neutral and contains what you really need to know to get your appetite whetted and for you to take the next step: education and training in graphology. This is the stepping stone, so to speak. Dr Ploog knows what he is talking about and most of all how to explain it, which is very important and half the battle won. A well thought out and researched book with excellent images. If you would like to understand more about the German approach to graphology, then this is also the book for you. If you intend to practise graphology in Europe, then this book is well worth the read.

A Concise Introduction to European Graphology

In this slim book you will enjoy a clear, concise explanation of sound, long established graphological principles which does not suffer from the kinds of amateurish over-simplifications encountered in books which are based on an isolated evaluation of minute graphic indicators. This book is very unique as far as graphology books is concerned. It was written by an expert and an established authority in the field who has both lectured in graphology within a University setting and has practiced it professionally. Although there are no books on handwriting analysis which will turn one into an expert overnight, this is probably the best short introduction to the subject currently in existence because it makes the reader aware of the unrealized scope and potential of handwriting investigation when it is practiced by one who recognizes its true scholarly depth and isn't simply peddling a superficial, non-sensical fortune telling gig. Therefore, it should be one of the first books picked up by the student (or simply the curious reader), who wants to learn more about the subject without burying himself in the field or exposing himself to bad graphology. Anyone who reads this book will recognize foremost that graphology isn't an occult science but enjoys intimate relations with modern psychology. It is these relations which are explored in the book and which both entertain and fascinate the reader. Lastly, I should also like to mention that as one who is thoroughly versed in European graphology this book actually taught me some things that I didn't know (and I've read literally hundreds of books on the subject!

One of the best boatbuilidng books with some great advice for open boat cruising.

It is a complete shame this book is out-of-print as it is one of the best books in my whole collection on boat building from selecting the right boat, building it, to cruising it on the water. The first several chapters go over Welsford's innovative building style allowing you to build strong but beautiful boats. He even has a chapter on aesthetics, something that is sorely lacking on the water these days. Then he goes into describing his different boat plans and with each boat he provides amusing and informative stories.

Marie Clay, FRSNZ, FNZPsS, FNZEI(Hon),Emeritus Professor, taught in primary schools and then at the University of Auckland where, for the next 30 years she introduced educational psychologists to ways of preventing psychological problems. She did post-graduate study in Developmental Psychology at the University of Minnesota on a Fulbright Scholarship and completed her doctorate at the University of Auckland with a thesis entitled "Emergent Literacy." Her 'Reading (and writing) Recovery' is an early literacy intervention, which is now implemented in five countries, and three languages. Literacy Lessons Designed For Individuals integrates what has been learned from that innovation with new research and theoretical advocacies. Shifts in early literacy learning can be monitored by teachers using her Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement in English, Spanish and French. A series of individual lessons can be delivered in those languages to about 150,000 children worldwide annually using a guidebook called Reading Recovery: Guidelines for Teachers in Training. Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals is a similar guidebook which aims to make accelerated progress possible for a wider range of problems. Marie Clay was past-President of the International Reading Association, served on the editorial committees of professional journals, was a research consultant at home and abroad including UNESCO, chaired a Social Science Research Committee advising government on policies and research allocations, and worked internationally with problem-solving related to early intervention research and practice.

In line with the California Reading Initiative and the assembly bills requiring informed diagnosis of children's reading readiness and progress, and multiple assessments thereof, this is a valuable diagnostic tool for children entering school, to be used with the test script on page 47-48 of Marie Clay's An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement.

I highly recommend this items for teachers of elementary students. I am a kindergarten teacher and use this book to assess my students' knowledge of Concepts of Print. This book makes it so easy to assess these skills in younger children.

Mathematics plays an important role in many scientific and engineering disciplines. This book deals with the numerical solution of differential equations, a very important branch of mathematics. Our aim is to give a practical and theoretical account of how to solve a large variety of differential equations, comprising ordinary differential equations, initial value problems and boundary value problems, differential algebraic equations, partial differential equations and delay differential equations. The solution of differential equations using R is the main focus of this book. It is therefore intended for the practitioner, the student and the scientist, who wants to know how to use R for solving differential equations. However, it has been our goal that non-mathematicians should at least understand the basics of the methods, while obtaining entrance into the relevant literature that provides more mathematical background. Therefore, each chapter that deals with R examples is preceded by a chapter where the theory behind the numerical methods being used is introduced. In the sections that deal with the use of R for solving differential equations, we have taken examples from a variety of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, pharmacokinetics. Many examples are well-known test examples, used frequently in the field of numerical analysis.

About the Author

Karline Soetaert studied Biology and Computer Science at Ghent University (Belgium), where she completed her PhD in Biology in 1989. She is now head of the Ecosystem Studies department at the Netherlands Institute of Sea Research in Yerseke, the Netherlands. She is also a guest professor at the University of Ghent and the Free University of Brussels. In her research she makes frequent use of mathematical models. She has authored over 130 papers in international journals and one book dealing with ecological modeling in R. She is the (co) author of several R-packages on CRAN (deSolve, bvpSolve, ReacTran, rootSolve, deTestSet, limSolve, LIM, ToxLim, NetIndices, FME, shape, diagram, ecolMod, marelac, AquaEnv, BCE).

Jeff Cash received his Mathematics degree from Imperial College, London in 1969 and then moved to St John’s college, Cambridge, where he studied for a PhD in the solution of differential equations under the guidance of Dr J.C.P. Miller. Having finished at Cambridge he returned to Imperial College as a member of staff in the Mathematics department and he has stayed there ever since. He was subsequently promoted to reader and then to Professor in Numerical Analysis. His research has been mainly on the solution of difference and differential equations. He has published several codes (MEBDFI, Cash-Karp and TWPBVP) and is the author of more than 100 scientific papers.

Francesca Mazzia earned her undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Bari, Italy and started her scientific career as a research assistant in Numerical Analysis in 1990. In 2000 she was appointed associate professor at the University of Bari. Her research activities mainly concern numerical methods for the solution of ordinary differential equations. She has authored over 50 papers in international journals and is the (co)author of two R packages currently available from CRAN (bvpSolve, deTestSet).

Differential equation analysis in R

The authors have explained the application of R, a quality, open source scientific programming system, to the numerical solution of all of the major classes of differential equations. This has been done by a series of interesting, detailed and clear examples. Thus, the authors have explained how differential equations can be integrated (solved) without using expensive, commercial software. They are to be congratulated for this contribution.

Something of a maverick in architectural circles, Vienna-based architect Krier ( Urban Space ) finds most modern buildings ugly and banal, yet he looks to Le Corbusier for guiding principles on linking form to function. Rejecting "organic" architecture inspired by Antonio Gaudi, Krier upholds principles of symmetry and geometry; eclectically, he seeks out examples of good design as he moves from a Yugoslavian fishmarket to an ancient Hindu temple. This chunky primer attempts to formulate a set of ground rules for architects and builders, yet when Krier gets to a discussion of proportions, he throws up his hands, exclaiming, "There are no rules . . . only experience can help us"; he then follows up with minutely detailed analyses of proportions in the human face, seashells, Gothic cathedrals and da Vinci's sketches of horses. Lively, very readable, combative, this delightful tome is generously illustrated with hundreds of photographs, sketches and lovingly shaded color drawings that illuminate key points.

We have come full circle. Seventy-five years ago, at the height of the academic, or Beaux Arts, period in Western architecture, books on architectural composition abounded, spreading the gospel of academic design from Paris to the hinterlands. This book, by an internationally known architect and professor at the Technical University of Vienna, harkens back to this period, parsing its approach into discrete operations and elements based on precedent. The approach is typological rather than holistic or technological, thereby throwing off the yoke of design as a species of problem solving that characterized so much colorless architecture in the mid-20th century. Important Treatise

Krier's treatise covers the lost art of building urban space as few other architecture books currently in print do. Any student hoping to understand the fundamentals of urban design will benefit from this valuable and highly accessible study.
