As a blind buy, but still needing an upper-elementary level book on Archimedes, I was more than happily surprised to see what an absolute gem this book was! Well written, easily understood, yet not too basic, the author weaves and explains scientific and mathematical principles in a story-like form that entranced my homeschooled fifth-grader. This is one he'll want to read over and over--not a book he felt he "had" to read. I highly recommend its purchase.

The Best in it's Category

This is the best book I came across on this subject. I have a child on the spectrum and he is on the Gluten,Casein and Dairy Free Diet.Recipes for this type of diet can be extremely hard to master and the end result is tasteless. Not anymore, Alice Sherwood has given us a book with recipes that work and the end result looks and taste delicious like any other type of foods.The blueberry muffins is one example. The recipes are easy to follow.The book is filled with beautiful pictures and has tons of information from shopping to traveling and dining out.A must have for anyone who has food allergy.

Title is Deceiving

I bought this book because the title says: Allergy-Free Cookbook, no eggs, no dairy, no nuts, no gluten. I was disappointed to find that this is not entirely true. Nearly all of the recipes contain at least one of those ingredients if not all of them! Variations are given on the right side of the page for the "free" versions. Things like replace heavy cream with soy cream (we don't do processed soy foods). The baked goods may be made gluten-free, but still contain dairy and eggs.

I have 2 ADHD sons and they are on the GF / CF diet. My husband is also allergic to eggs so I cook mostly without eggs. This cookbook just didn't suite my needs. It is a nice looking book with good photos. And I have found a few recipes that we all like. The Chicken Fajitas are good and we use brown rice tortillas with them, we also like the Noodles in Hot Ginger Broth.

I would check this one out from the library before purchasing it. There are other great books out there that are healthy and gluten / dairy free.

Not what it appears

I echo the review about many of the recipes not really being GF, DF etc. as the book says and the optional way to make each recipe isn't simple for most of the recipes. The way it's set up is confusing and many of the ingredients are expensive and unusual. This is not a book for someone who wants to find allergy-free, easier food to make, especially if they're looking to save time. It's more like a gourmet allergy-free cookbook for people that want to spend their whole day in the kitchen and have plenty of money to spend and time to read directions. And although she calls them "family" recipes, a lot of the recipes are not very kid-friendly.

A great story but not Star Force

I just read this post and the Star Force facebook page. It is a direct quote by Aer-ki Jyr. I just thought that it should be included on this page.

"Ok, a point of clarification...
Apex is NOT part of the Star Force universe.
They both use similar technology...jumpships, lachars, plasma cannons, telepathy, etc, but the stories are not connected. I wrote Apex before I wrote Star Force, couldn't get it published the conventional route, then discovered Amazon's independent publishing. I thought it was probably had a catch, so I didn't want to risk Apex on it so I wrote an old story I had been kicking around and that became SF1.
Well, there was no catch, Amazon is great, and I went on writing it and put Apex on the shelf. Then over a year later I realized I might as well publish it, so I did.
I admit, from your point of view, they really look and feel like they're the same thing, right down to the Cres being genetic hybrids of Human and Elarioni. Seriously, I didn't plan that. Just happened. But what you don't know is what lies ahead in Star Force that will make it incompatible with Apex. I do, so for me I don't think they're the same.
Some of the reviews on Apex say they're the same, so I wanted to point out that they're not. Would be kind of cool if they were, but it would also be massive spoilers, and I don't write like that. I like to keep you guys guessing.
So I hope that clears that up."

Great ride

I was sceptical, but soon converted. This was every bit as good as Star Force. It seems Aer-ki Jyr writes exactly the type of stories I like to read. Space opera setting, a plot with vision, strong characters, attention to technology and physical evolution. Apex did not disapoint, and delivered on every aspects. A great ride.

Star Diamonds starts out at a fast pace and never lets up. Just about the time you think you have it figured out, it takes another turn and the ending is nothing like you would expect. Looking forward to the next two books. Great easy read. strongly recommend it.

I liked this book much more than I expected to from a small artist. McGraw does a great job crafting the complex life of Gilchrist, the main character, through both his business and personal life. I look forward to the rest of the series immensely and can't wait to continue Jim's exciting trilogy!

Seven-year-old Munnu is growing up in Indian-administered Kashmir. Life revolves around his family: Mama, Papa, sister Shahnaz, brothers Adil and Akhtar and, his favourite, older brother Bilal. It also revolves around Munnu’s two favourite things – sugar and drawing.

But Munnu’s is a childhood experienced against the backdrop of conflict. Bilal’s classmates are crossing over into the Pakistan-administered portion of Kashmir to be trained to resist the ‘occupation’; Papa and Bilal are regularly taken by the military to identification parades where informers will point out ‘terrorists’; Munnu’s school is closed; close neighbours are killed and the homes of Kashmiri Hindu families lie abandoned, as once close, mixed communities have ruptured under the pressure of Kashmir’s divisions.

Munnu is an amazingly personal insight into everyday life in Kashmir. Closely based on Malik Sajad’s own childhood and experiences, it is a beautiful, evocatively drawn graphic novel that questions every aspect of the Kashmir situation – the faults and responsibilities of every side, the history of the region, the role of Britain and the West, the possibilities for the future. It opens up the story of this contested and conflicted land, while also giving a brilliantly close, funny and warm-hearted portrait of a boy’s childhood and coming-of-age.

About the Author

Malik Sajad was born in 1987, in Srinagar, Kashmir. His illustrations and stories have appeared in various local and international publications. He studied Visual Art at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Refreshing perspective on Kashmir

Beautifully told story of Kashmir and the price that citizens pay for a conflict that they have no control of...I'd recommend this book to everybody who is even remotely interested in knowing about Kashmir... This is a fresh perspective and you can't help rooting for Munnu who is as real as the author himself.

A fresh read: Incredibly written and drawn

This is a beautifully illustrated book, and very well written. I don't usually read comics or anything like that, but this book is much more than a "comic book". Great read, well crafted, illustrated, and written.
