This carefully argued, lucid work defends a traditional conception of morality as a rational constraint on pursuing individual interest. Gauthier contends that rational cooperation is central to morality and he formulates a principle of agreement based upon a game-theoretic account of bargaining. Using the Prisoner's Dilemma, he argues for the rationality of complying with the principle from an initial noncoercive bargaining position in which one may better oneself provided that doing so does not worsen the condition of the person upon whom one acts. Gauthier concludes that commitment to rational cooperation not only assures fairness but also yields greater net utility than a policy of exclusive self-interest. This is an incredible true sweet tale of a little girl born with a physical disfiguration. Flannery O'Connor wrties a brilliant introduction and the story of this innocent little girl is irresistable.

A beautiful little book about a beautiful little girl

Years ago I read the Flannery O'Connor introduction to "A Memoir of Mary Ann", and I have returned to it again and again. Where suffering and death are concerned, I find O'Connor's voice to be uniquely bracing and comforting. But only recently did I read the book for which she wrote the introduction.

"A Memoir of Mary Ann" affected me deeply. It is a simple story told in a simple style; and yet it seems to disclose the mystery of existence with much greater clarity than all the tomes of philosophers, ancient and modern. Perhaps that's because life's ultimate purpose is simple: love God and love your neighbor - whoever your neighbor happens to be. Mary Ann Long lived that love in a way that should humble and inspire those of us who tend to complicate the brief time we have in this world.
