Really Solid Beginning Italian book...Buy it New.

This is my first Italian course and I think Sentieri is a pretty solid book. There's a good amount of vocabulary and grammar. The Fotoromanzo video uses the vocab & grammar of each lesson. It's helpful to see and hear people using the exact language I'm learning. I also like that the Fotoromanzo is well done, contemporary and not corny at all. It's pretty obvious they used a hand-held camera and it was recently shot. This isn't one of those old, dry, textbook programs.
My only complaint is I went online to buy Sentieri and didn't realize a used book would be missing a supersite passcode (which is basically the online component of the textbook). I realized that in order to do all of the practice activities, watch the Fotoromanzo, etc I needed the supersite passcode. The book also refers to the supersite a lot so I knew I was missing a lot of information and practice. I went to the publisher's site to purchase the supersite passcode. In the end, I ended up spending more on a used book + a supersite passcode than I would have on a new book with the supersite passcode.

I'm roughly two thirds of the way through this book and I can listen to Italian radio and understand most of what is said and can communicate my own thoughts pretty effectively, and this in just a few months of (albeit pretty intense) self-study. But here's the caveat: this book is part of a system that includes a very extensive online learning suite, and I don't think you can buy it here, you may have to consult the publisher's site. I purchased the book as well as the whole online package, which included an online version of the text, online practice exercises, videos, and the online student activities manual (WebSAM). I haven't used the physical book since chapter two, so that was something of a waste I think - although maybe it will be handy in the future as a reference.
I find that one can get everything through the online packages - I read the text on my computer then do the exercises, as well as the handful of activities that are in the book that don't have an online component. For those who aren't sure if the WebSAM is worth it, I think that it has been, you get a slew of extra exercises including exercises that require you to listen to passages in Italian, which has been a must-have for self-study. I find the grammar to be sectioned well and the vocab to be inclusive without being too superfluous - I often find after a chapter that I hear the words I just learned on the radio with some regularity, which is a nice reward.
As a final note to other self-studiers out there, I also highly recommend getting TuneIn radio on your phone. You can listen to streaming radio from anywhere in the world all day, so while it's not as interactive as the discussions one might have in a class, you can get a ton of exposure in a colloquial (non-academic) setting.
