Great Book for Beginners and Experienced Engineers

This book is good for both beginners and experienced professionals. It does a good job of getting you to think and is also good for recalling old experiences you may have had in the past that relate to details and explanations in this book.

Disappointment

Classically trained as a Mechanical Engineer, my experience in design is what I learned on my own. Industrial designers and the like are given the bare bones of the actual design process, whereas Engineers are drastically less so. My kind were relinquished to the analysis and validation side of things.
Granted, this could vary from school to school. For my ABET accredited university, however, this was absolutely the case.
With that said, I've been looking for good reading on the actual process of designing mechanical systems, in the hope to create a greater empathy within myself for machinery and how to design and make them better.
This book, albeit fairly easy and enjoyable to read, absolutely lacks the fundamentals of machine synthesis. Great tips are given, great examples are shown, but the actual concept of starting with a set of parameters, and creating a machine are loosely defined, and not fleshed out at all in this text.
I recommend the book if it were half the price, but, for the price, you're better off reading some blogs.
